Once again the Mercer Island boys swimming team is starting off the post season run as the KingCo league champs.

The Islanders solidified their title last Thursday, beating Bellevue 118.5-66.5

The team, many of which have already qualified for the post season with district or state times, added the 2012 KingCo league champions to their list of accomplishments in the pool this year.

The 200-yard relay team narrowly edged out Bellevue in the first event of the afternoon. The Islanders team of Andrew Weiss, Noah Deiparine, Dan Simons and Marco Signorelli won with a 1:39.10 time to qualify for state.

In the 200-yard freestyle race, Quinn Markwith also qualified for districts with a 1:51.45 time to win the event, followed by Duncan Koontz with a 1:52.29 time for second. Teammate Samuel Chong was third in 1:52.90.

Bellevue’s Michael Stanchi won the 200 individual medley relay race with a 2:04.59 time, followed by Simons in second at 2:08.61.

Another Wolverine took the top spot in the next event, the 50-yard freestyle sprint. Carl Andrews won with a 21.64 time, while Mercer Island’s Weiss was close behind at 22.00.

The diving event belonged to the Islanders, with four boys competing, to Bellevue’s one. Cody Hall won with a 209.55 score, while Connor Neislon was second with a 170.20 score. Nicholas Harris was third at 114.10, while Chase Jones, for Bellevue, was fourth at 102.75.

In the 100-yard butterfly race, Bellevue’s James Douchette took the top time at 54.06, while Mercer Island’s Michael Bower was second in 55.82. Weiss was third in 56.64, while Ralph Austin was fourth in 58.50.

The 100-yard freestyle event earned Signorelli a top time, qualifying for state in 48.06, while Brandt Waesche was fourth in 51.04.

Koontz was second in the 500 freestyle event in 5:03.88 to qualify for districts, while Simons was third in 5:26.10.

The Islanders also won the 200 freestyle relay race in 1:31.11 to qualify for state. The team included: Deiparine, MacLane, Markwith and Signorelli.

Chong took second in the backstroke race with a 57.01 time to qualify for state, while Ian Piper was third in 57.50.

Deiparine won the 100 breast stroke race in 1:04.85, with Bower taking second in 1:06.64.

The final event of the afternoon, the 400 freestyle relay race, had the Islanders winning again, this time with Simons, Waesche, Signorelli and Weiss swimming to a 3:17.92 state qualifying time.

The meet was also the last home event of the regular season for the Mercer Island seniors, who were all recognized by the team and their parents. The seniors also thanked head coach Chauntelle Johnson for all she does, noting they were the first senior class to have never lost a state title.
