According to the city of Mercer Island, First Lady Jill Biden will arrive on the Island this Friday.
A White House representative, Seattle news outlets and some local residents noted that she will be attending fundraisers at private residences on the Island and in Shoreline to discuss the Biden Victory Fund.
On the Island traffic front on Friday, the city said, “While no major traffic impacts are anticipated, the Mercer Island Police Department is aware and additional traffic control measures will be in place.”
Island police chief Ed Holmes said the Secret Service notified his department of Biden’s upcoming visit last week and police offered its support if needed. Police also met with Secret Service to discuss security measures.
Biden is scheduled to touch down at King County International Airport-Boeing Field on Thursday night and visit the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle on Friday before the political events.
She will spotlight the Biden Administration’s Unity Agenda and Cancer Moonshot initiative at Fred Hutch by delving into the importance of supporting cancer survivors through specialized care and research, reads a White House press release, adding that the advocacy includes survivors of childhood cancers and breast cancer.
The White House website notes, “By bringing together the federal government, health care providers, researchers, patients, caregivers, advocates, and the public and private sectors, the Cancer Moonshot is dramatically accelerating progress in the fight against cancer.”
On Sept. 13, the Bidens spotlighted Cancer Moonshot prior to a Cancer Cabinet meeting, and Jill remarked, according to a White House document, “For Joe and for me, this is the mission of our lives. And I look forward to hearing from all of you about the ways I can help advance and lift up your work. So, together, I know we are going to end cancer as we know it.”
