Mercer Island High School amassed a heap of runs in the opening round of the 3A state baseball playoffs.
The Islanders defeated Gig Harbor, 13-1, in a six-inning contest on May 14 at Foss High School to advance to the second round of the tournament.
Leading the way for the locals against Gig Harbor were Tyler Gilroy with two hits and four RBIs, Jacob Colyer with one hit and three RBIs and Cole Rowe with one hit and one RBI. The Islander batters were the recipients of 14 walks.
MI’s Jack Buchan pitched the first two innings and Gilroy earned the win by closing the game out with four innings of hitless and scoreless pitching.
Next up for the 17th-seeded Islanders was another loser-out game against No.1-seeded Kennewick on May 18 at Roy Johnson Field in Kennewick. MI won, 11-8, and advanced to the quarterfinals
Also on May 18 in Kennewick, eighth-seeded Eastside Catholic beat MI, 8-4, to end the locals’ season.
