** Phone scam alert: The Mercer Island Police Department (MIPD) has recently received reports of scammers calling Island residents claiming to be Mercer Island police officers — often using real officers’ names — and directing residents to send payment for various reasons in the form of gift cards. The department said that officers will never call residents and demand payment for any reason. Scammers will have voicemail set up that has a recording claiming to be that officer in attempts to seem legitimate.

When in doubt, hang up the phone, call a trusted family member or dial the department’s 24/7 non-emergency dispatch line at 425-577-5656 before giving a stranger your personal information or payment in any form. A legitimate officer will return your call.

MIPD said to keep this in mind any time residents receive a call from someone claiming to “help” resolve an issue with their bank account, legal matter or claim that the resident is mistakenly involved in a criminal issue like a warrant for their arrest.
