Mercer Island Visual Arts League (MIVAL) is hanging its 2024 Holiday Show from now until Dec. 14 at the Mercer Island Community and Event Center.

Forty-one MIVAL members entered the show this year — some for the first time, some for their first show ever and some of them won awards.

Juror June Sekiguchi awarded first place to Nancy Abel for her watercolor, “Saltwater Dreams”; second place to Dot Kimura for her ceramic vase, “Coral”; third place to Rosalie Frankel for her encaustic collage, “Untold Stories”; honorable mention to Zeynep Banu Alev for her monotype, “Alice”; and honorable mention to Anne Sekizaki for her oil painting, “Le Mans.”

“Many pieces are appropriate for gifts, the festive wreaths would be fun to decorate with from Thanksgiving through the holidays, and the fine art will enhance your home forever,” reads a press release.

Many heads and hands made the show a success. Thanks to Mary McKelvey who helped steer the boat at every turn; Carol Whitaker who did all of the postcards, fliers and online images for publicity; Ken Claflin for PayPal; Anne Hritzay and Lorri Falterman for money matters; Theresa Zwingman for making the labels; and Whitaker, Claudia Zimmerman and Barbara Price for curating the show.

The show’s opening reception will take place from 5-7 p.m. on Nov. 24. MIVAL artists are displaying imaginative work in watercolor, silk, photography, glass, ceramic wood and leather along with 14 unique wreaths for holiday decoration. Visitors will find hand-crafted gifts such as ceramic plates and trays, beautiful wooden cutting boards, charming glass snowmen, ornaments and cards, as well as fine art and sculpture for your home. Awards will be presented at 5:30 p.m. by acclaimed Seattle artist and curator Sekiguchi. Refreshments will be available.

The show will hang from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday-Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday-Saturday.
