Marsh points the way at guard position

MIHS senior will attend Westmont College next season.

Anna Marsh thrives in her point guard position by bringing copious amounts of energy and leadership to the court each time out.

The Mercer Island High School (MIHS) senior basketball player has been a fixture in the point guard spot for the last four years and has put in a ton of work along the way as the Islanders bounce through their KingCo and nonleague schedule. Last season, MIHS placed second in the 3A KingCo tournament and advanced to districts.

Marsh jumped into one of her main goals come game time: “I think being able to get the whole team to come together and support each other’s backs and always hyping everyone up.”

First-year MIHS head coach Ariel Sciammas provided his take on the Islander hoopster: “Anna is a leader of this team. She pushes herself and teammates to (be) better. She wants the team to be successful above her own personal goals. I have enjoyed getting to know and coaching Anna. She has a bright future.”

Marsh will continue her basketball and academic journey at Division II Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California, next season. Along with hoops, she may focus on art or business in the classroom realm.

This season, Marsh captains the squad with fellow seniors Olivia Killian and Kiera Kelly and junior Anna Mock. The Islanders began the season 0-2 and Marsh feels the talented team needs to learn how to work together and buy in to the system to reap success.

Marsh has been playing basketball since the fifth grade, first competing in rec ball before joining MI select and then moving on to AAU with Tree of Hope.

Along with forming friendships within the tight-knit Island community, Marsh said it’s been amazing to work with her pals on the basketball court as well.

On a personal note, Marsh delved into what keeps her rolling each day with basketball in hand: “My takeaway is always push yourself to your full potential. Always, every day, get 1% better.”

The Reporter asked Marsh a series of questions to get a behind-the-scenes glimpse into her life:

What would you say is your biggest pet peeve?

When people chew with their mouth open.

What’s your favorite restaurant on the Island?

Riviera Maya. It’s a Mexican restaurant on the south end.

What’s your go-to dish at that place?

Chicken fajitas.

And always chewing with your mouth closed, right?

Yeah (laughs).

What would you say is a binge-worthy TV series that you’d recommend?

Oh, I’ve been on “Suits.” I like that show.

If they were to make a movie about you, who would play your character?

Who would play me? To be honest, I don’t know who would play me. I don’t think anyone could play me. I’m a difficult version to play, probably.

What’s your daily motto when you get up and you go into the day?

Just do it (as Nike says). Have fun and roll with it.

If you could go to dinner with one person, who would that be?

Nika Mühl (Seattle Storm). Paige Bueckers (UConn). One of the two. That’d be fun.
