A beloved holiday tradition graced the stage this past weekend as the Island Youth Ballet (IYB) presented its 20th annual performance of “Excerpts from The Nutcracker” at the Mercer Island High School Performing Arts Center. The production, directed by Susan Valencia, continues to be a highlight of the holiday season for both Island residents and visitors alike.
With four performances — including both matinees and evening shows from Dec. 13-15 — this year’s rendition dazzled audiences of all ages, transporting them to the magical world of “The Nutcracker.” The stage came alive with the familiar scenes of falling snow, toy soldiers, mischievous mice, a fearsome Rat King, and of course, the dreaming Marie and her brave Nutcracker Prince.
Set to the timeless music of Tchaikovsky, IYB’s production showcased the immense talent of more than 30 young dancers, ranging in age from 5 to 18. The students performed more than 100 roles, each bringing a fresh energy and dedication to the classic ballet. From the delicate snowflakes swirling through the wintry scene to the grand, show-stopping finale in the Land of Sweets, every moment was filled with charm, grace, and holiday spirit.
During the intermission, attendees were invited to peruse a holiday boutique offering seasonal crafts and gifts, while enjoying festive beverages and tasty treats. It was a perfect opportunity for families to come together and celebrate the magic of the season before returning to their seats for the second act.
The performance’s ability to delight audiences year after year — while giving young dancers the opportunity to shine on stage — has made it a highlight of the holiday season. With its roots firmly planted in local talent, this production remains a testament to the dedication and passion of the IYB and its founder, Valencia. The tradition continues to thrive, and with the passion and talent displayed in this year’s production, it’s clear that “Excerpts from the Nutcracker” will remain a staple of Mercer Island’s holiday celebrations for years to come.
