With the new sports season fully underway here is a look at how the Mercer Island High School teams are doing this week. See the next two issues of the Reporter for previews on each team.
Girls lacrosse
The Mercer Island girls lacrosse team earned their first win of the season, beating Lake Sammamish 16-11 on Monday, March 15. Senior Ellen Haas had a hat trick with three goals, while three Islanders had two goals apiece – Loreal Camp, Sarah Drucker and Hannah Bahn.
The Islanders host Lakeside tonight in their first home game of the season.

Boys lacrosse
In their first game of the season, a jamboree match up with Mukilteo, the Mercer Island boys lacrosse team dominated 15-1. Junior Matthew Shields had four goals for the Islanders, while the rest of the Islanders team worked their way through scoring with seven players earning at least one goal during the game.
On Wednesday night the Islanders traveled to Lakeside where they won 17-2. Senior Spencer Tierney had 14 ground balls in the game.
The Islanders travel to Bainbridge for the annual Battle of the Islands this weekend.

Tennis
The Mercer Island girls tennis team picked up their first win of the season, taking the Davis High School Coke Classic title last weekend in Yakima. The Islanders placed first out of the eight teams competing.
In the singles competition, in a field of eight, Mercer Island’s Julia Zook took fifth in the No. 1 draw, Ellie Rudee was second in the No. 2 draw and Carissa Ham was third in the No. 3 draw.
Mercer Island swept the doubles competition, with Chelsea Bailey/Julia Schubach taking the No. 1 draw title, Valerie Gage/Sophia Gage winning the No. 2 draw and Erica Baska/Saloni Parikh winning the No. 3.
Points for the competition were tabulated based on a school’s finish in each draw. Mercer Island beat Gonzaga Prep by two points for the overall win.
Baseball
On Wednesday night the Islanders hosted their first home game of the season, beating Interlake 14-2. Mercer Island kicked off the night at Island Crest Park with a 4-0 lead in the first inning, and ended it big with a nine run last inning. Senior captain Willy Reel was 3-3 at bat, with a home run and four RBI. Kirby Ingram was 2-3 at bat. The Islanders are now 1-0 this season.

Softball
The Mercer Island girls softball team fell in their first home game against Federal Way on Wednesday afternoon, losing 6-2. The Islanders, playing for the first time on their new turf field at South Mercer Play fields, were up 2-0 going into the fourth inning before giving up runs to the Eagles.
