The Mercer Island boys tennis team began its quest for perfection last week, defeating Sammamish and Mount Si High Schools.
Against Sammamish, the Islanders won 6-1. In the singles matches, Jordan Smith, Max Franklin and Eric Snyder each won their matches against the Totems, while Islander David Peck lost in three games to senior Chad Nunn.
Mercer Island doubles fared well, garnering six of seven wins. Andrew Smith and Zack Elliott won in two games, Matt Sedlacek and Jared Thomas won 6-0, 6-0, and Glen Kelton and Craig Deninger also won two games, keeping their Totems opponent scoreless. Jon Lai and Jeremy Chow won 6-1 and 6-0 against Gana Balgan and Brandon Rea, while Koonmin Chua and Alex Foehr beat Van Hory and Anthony Kao. Islanders Quinn Snell and Jared Thomas won their match 8-0 and the lone doubles loss of the afternoon was Nick Medlock and Nate Midelberger.
Up against the Mount Si Wildcats on Thursday, Mercer Island won 6-1, sweeping the doubles competition, 3-0. Each of the doubles teams, which include Franklin/Smith, Sedlacek and Kelton and the team of Lai and Chow, beat their opponents in two games each.
In the singles matches against Mount Si, Smith lost to Mount Si’s Leonard Gebhardt, 6-2 and 7-5, for the team’s only loss of the afternoon.
