Softball

The Mercer Island girls softball team fell to Bellevue on Tuesday afternoon before traveling to take on Garfield in Seattle. The Islanders started slow against Bellevue, unable to keep the Wolverines from racking up hits in the first innings. The final score was 18-5.

The Wolverines started off the first inning at bat and made the most of their time there, scoring five runs before the Islanders took to the plate. Bellevue held Mercer Island scoreless until the fourth inning, when the Islanders earned three runs, followed in the fifth by two. The Islanders had four errors in the game.

On Thursday, the Islanders traveled to play Garfield, where they lost 15-9 against the Bulldogs.

Mercer Island had a strong first inning, putting five runs on the board, but it was not enough to slow Garfield in the third when the Bulldogs earned nine runs.

The MIHS girls softball team woes continued on Monday night following a 20-0 loss to Liberty, at Liberty. The Islanders play five innings against the Patriots, giving up eight runs in the first, seven in the second and five in the third. The Islanders had no hits in the game and had three errors in the match.

The Islanders will host Mount Si on Wednesday afternoon beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Boys soccer

The Mercer Island boys soccer team earned two wins last week, beating Interlake on Tuesday and Juanita on Friday night. The team is now 5-2-2 this season.

Traveling to Interlake on Tuesday, the Islanders earned a 5-1 win over the Saints. David Yount started things off for the Islanders with an assist from James Kashima in the 19th minute of the game. Danny Strome followed not long after a pass from Jene Wook-Shin in the 28th minute. Interlake connected Andy Fordyce and Christian Rodriguez for the Saints’ lone goal in the 30th minute.

After the half, the Islanders went on the offensive early in the second half to add two more goals to the final score. Nick Ward scored an unassisted goal in the 50th minute, and five minutes later was followed by Strome’s second goal of the night off an assist from Yount.

Last Friday, Mercer Island traveled to Juanita, where the Islanders earned a 3-1 win. The team will travel to Bellevue next Friday and host Liberty on April 20 at 7:30 p.m.

Boys lacrosse

The Mercer Island boys lacrosse team kept its record unblemished after facing off with defending state champion Issaquah on Friday night.

The Islanders, who are now 10-0 this season, were looking to avenge the last-minute state championship loss from last spring, during Friday’s matchup at Issaquah which the Islanders won 9-7.

The score was tied 5-5 going into the half in the highly anticipated game, but Mercer Island pulled away in the third period, adding three goals to the total.

Mercer Island’s Jonathan Wettack had three goals during the win, while Doug Mahony and Matthew Shields each added two goals for the team. T. Claes Johnson and Steven Taylor had a goal apiece, while goalie Hap Giruad saved six shots for the Islanders.

The Eagles are now 7-3 this season.

The Islanders begin a four-game home series starting with Puyallup on Friday at 8 p.m. in Islander Stadium.

Baseball

The Mercer Island boys baseball team improved to 8-2 after beating Bellevue 10-0 on Monday night. Coming off a loss to 4A Eastmont on Saturday during the High School Baseball Classic in Safeco Field, the Islanders rallied, holding the Wolverines to a scoreless finish and just two hits during the six inning game.

The Islanders started a low key Monday game with just one run in the first and one in the third, before exploding off the bat in the fifth and sixth innings for four runs in each.

Mercer Island’s junior pitcher Jordan Richatz pitched five innings in the game, giving up just one hit during that time. Max Dammeier was 1 for 1 at bat and had 3 RBI, while Willy Reel was 3 for 4 at bat, including a triple and a single and scored three runs for Mercer Island.

The team took on Eastmont High School, out of Wenatchee, on Saturday during the High School Baseball Classic at Safeco Field.

The team, which has a 7-2 record, lost the game 9-4 to the 4A opponent. Eastmont kicked the game off with five runs in the first inning, scoring four more in the fifth and sixth innings. Mercer Island was kept relatively quiet at bat, not scoring until the sixth inning.

Kirby Ingram was 2 for 4 at bat and Mike Potoshnik was 2 for 2 with one run during the game.

The Islanders host Liberty on Friday at Island Crest Park.

Golf

The Mercer Island girls golf team took down 4A Lake Washington on Monday afternoon in a non-conference match up at Jefferson Park Golf Course. The Islanders won it 214 strokes to Lake Washington’s 280.

Chelsea Saelee earned another first place finish, shooting a 38, for two over course par, while Haley Chinn was second with a 40. Kristen Numata finished with 41 strokes, Chanel Lau had 47 for the Islanders in fourth place and Jackie Pearson rounded out the top finishers with a fifth place finish at 48 strokes.

Tennis

The Mercer Island girls tennis match that was scheduled for this afternoon against Juanita at MIHS has been rescheduled for tomorrow afternoon starting at 3:45 p.m. The courts were deemed to wet for play earlier this morning after steady rainfall. The team also had to reschedule last Thursday’s match against Skyline after it was rained out. No word yet on when that non-conference game will be rescheduled. The team is still scheduled to host Lake Washington on Thursday afternoon starting at 3:45 p.m. at the Mercer Island tennis courts.
