The Mercer Island School District announced school will be in session Friday, Oct. 3 after the City of Mercer Island issued a second boil-water advisory Thursday, Oct. 2.

According to a post on the district’s website, the Department of Health approved the district plan to use bottled water, temporary washing stations in bathrooms and kitchens, and “heat-and-eat” meals.

“Our first priority is to keep students safe,” said Mercer Island School District Superintendent Dr. Gary Plano. “This situation presents an opportunity for our students. Millions of people around the world do not have access to drinkable water. Teachers can view this temporary situation as a teachable moment and incorporate it into the curriculum.”

The district will have more than 10,000 bottles of water available at school on Friday but asks that parents send their children to school with one or two bottles of water if possible.

After-school activities will also go on as scheduled. Temporary wash stations and bottled water will be used and access points to tap water like drinking fountains will be labeled to prevent their use.
