Islander Middle School seventh-grader Jasper Hugunin recently entered the National STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) video game challenge.

Hugunin’s game, Robot Commander, uses a virtual robot to teach middle school students how to use a computer program.

The game was built to run on any Web browser, making it accessible to anyone.

Hugunin won two categories: best playable game for an open platform and best playable game incorporating STEM themes.

With his win, IMS will earn a $2,000 grant from the event’s sponsors: AMD Foundation, the Entertainment Software Association and Microsoft.
