The Mercer Island wrestling team traveled to the 3A regional tournament at Kelso High School on Saturday, Feb. 9. The Islanders finished fourth as a team with 130.5 points. Mountain View won the event with 196 points.
Individually, Taylan Yuasa won the 106 division, by pinning William Taisacan of Mountain View in 4:27. Luke Wilson finished in second place in the 120 division. Wilson lost by 9-6 decision to Prairie’s Will Treadwell. In the 126 division, Jake Pruchno was second after being pinned by Kelso’s Josh Newberg.
Nick Chandler won the 170 bracket by pinning Brandon Proffitt of Mountain View in 4:39.
Trevor Gullstad finished in sixth place in the 126 bracket, while Connor Gullstad was fourth overall in the 145 division. Chris Richards earned a sixth place finish in the 160 bracket, and Evan Condon was fifth overall in the 195 division. Mercer Island’s Andy Picton was sixth in the 220 weight class, and Ben O’Connell was sixth in the 285 weight division.
Qualified wrestlers move on to the Mat Classic, which begins on Friday, Feb 15 at the Tacoma Dome.
Wrestlers for Mercer Island include: Yuasa at 106, Wilson at 120, Pruchno at 126, Connor Gullstad at 145, and Nick Chandler at 170.
The tournament begins with the first session from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, with the second session from 4 to 9:30 p.m.
The third session, including matches for third through eighth places will start at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16. The championship matches begin at 5:15 p.m. on Saturday.
Tickets for the Mat Classic are $8 for adults and $6 for students and seniors for one day of the tournament. Tickets for both days are $13 for adults and $10 for students and seniors.
