Islander receives fellowship

Naomi Weiss Newman of Mercer Island was awarded an Honorary Fellowship at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology on June 15, for her leadership role in building the Northwest Chapter of the American Technion Society (ATS) and its regional board.

She has been a member of the ATS local board since 2007, and is a graduate of the national 21st Century Leadership Development Program.

Along with her husband Jonathan, she has supported the Trauma and Military Medicine Research Fund at the Ruth and Bruce Rappaport Faculty of Medicine, an apartment in the North Pacific Region Graduate Student Village Dormitories Project, and other Technion projects.

Newman studied journalism and communications at the University of Oregon. She worked for several years as a senior account manager for international communications concerns, including Cole & Weber and Ogilvy & Mather, serving a range of Fortune 100 companies. She then founded and managed her own firm, Naomi Weiss Communications, consulting in public relations and communications for clients that included the Boeing Company, the Government of Italy, and AT&T Small Business Enterprises.

While the Technion is her main interest, she also serves on the board of the Jewish Federation and is active with a number of Jewish and Israeli organizations including Hadassah, JCC, Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center, AIPAC and Seattle Hebrew Academy.
