At a meeting Tuesday, Jan. 12, Islanders got a preview of narrowed design plans for a major remodel of the Mercer Island Library. The response was mixed. Many Islanders felt they were losing the most beloved elements of the existing structure, others questioned if the remodel was needed in the first place.
During the annual Audubon Society bird count, Island volunteers tallied 3,047 individual birds and 67 different species, a number consistent with the last several years. Included in that count were two great blue herons, seven bald eagles, one red-tailed hawk and two barred owls.

Promises to keep Mercer Island’s former Stevenson Farm an equestrian site are progressing. The approximately five-acre parcel, at 6053 Island Crest Way, was sold in August 2012, after property owner Lewis Stevenson died in 2011.

Earlier this fall, the city released a zoning map effectively displaying that nowhere on the Island could entrepreneurs open a marijuana storefront. Still, as of last Tuesday, Dec. 3, there were two applicants for licenses on the Island—one for production, and the other an application for retail space.
