The city of Mercer Island has joined Twitter, an online social messaging utility. According to city Communications Coordinator Joy Johnston, the new media will allow residents — once registered on Twitter — to follow and contribute to city news, announcements and emergency information. The latter purpose, Johnston emphasized, is especially important.
The Mercer Island City Council approved amendments to city zoning restrictions on the establishment of preschools in residential areas during its April 20 meeting. The amendments allow churches, as well as other private or public facilities, to house preschools without the previously required conditional-use permit and open up residential cul-de-sacs as possible preschool locations.
Mave Enterprises, Inc., of Los Angeles, has voluntarily recalled all pistachios sold under the It’s Delish label due to a potential salmonella contamination. The product was sold to West Coast retail stores between Sept. 1, 2008 and April 13, 2009, including the Mercer Island Albertsons. However, according to store manager John Gillespie, Albertsons has not stocked It’s Delish pistachios since February.

Tent City 4, a roving homeless community, was allowed to camp on the Mercer Island United Methodist Church property late last summer and fall. The summary judgement, which was raised by Mercer Island Citizens for a Fair Process, was settled in favor of the city on April 24 and will not go on to trial.

More than 20 vehicles were prowled in a North-end Island neighborhood on April 15, one of the largest strings of crime in recent years. According to the Mercer Island police report, vehicles parked in the 3700 block of 79th Avenue S.E., 3800 block of 80th Avenue S.E. and the 3800 block of 81st Avenue S.E. were prowled late in the night. Almost all of the vehicles had been unlocked.

The City Council approved its agreement with the Boys & Girls Club for public contribution to the PEAK project on April 6. The city is giving a total of $1 million to the youth recreational facility.
