Lawrence Raymond Lunden was a true Mercer Island pioneer. Lunden, 90, died Dec. 23 after crossing Island Crest Way and being struck by a passing car.

The year started out with the Mercer Island High School’s Marching Band making the sojourn to London to participate in London’s New Year’s Day Parade. The honor was almost squelched by bad weather that caused flight delays, but the entire band made it by the skin of their teeth, and performed gloriously.
Most of us have a jar at home, filled with pocket change that we take for granted. Even kids have a piggy bank filled with change. So what if all those pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters could go to use for a better cause?
