Each fall, only 35 students are accepted into the University of Washington’s Academy Program, a group of young, gifted academics. Two are from Mercer Island this year.
There are a total of 135 residential and condominium listings on Mercer Island. That’s down by 36.32 percent from a year ago. Of those properties, 117 are single family residences and 18 are condominiums. It is interesting to note that the 33 new listings that came on the market last month were all single family homes; not one new condo listing came on the market.
Mercer Island High School principal John Harrison announced Oct. 4 that he will be stepping down to take a position with the Bellevue School District, after six years at MIHS. His last day at MIHS is Oct. 13. MIHS is his fourth school as a principal, and fifth as an administrator.

Dr. Cheryl Hayes specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation, the medical specialty concerned with diagnosing, evaluating and treating patients with physical disabilities. It took two years to plan, but Hayes and her husband Leo Catallo, son Matt Catallo, and three other young men, Brian Sedlacek, Carlos Barrios and Sam Mildeberger, recently returned from a medical mission in Peru.
Remarking that a three-year contract is a “little out of the norm,” by superintendent of the Mercer Island School District, Gary Plano, the MISD Board of Directors, voted unanimously to approve the new contract with the Mercer Island Education Association at Thursday night’s regularly scheduled meeting. The new contract is valid until Aug. 31, 2014.
