During the past three seasons, no team in Washington state has been able to touch Mercer Island boys swimming. The chasm between Mercer Island and all the other teams has grown to record proportions — this year, it could be bigger.

This was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the Mercer Island girls volleyball team. After all, the team lost four key seniors last season and had to adapt to a new setter. But in addition to rebuilding itself, the team has continued to thrive, winning the KingCo and District titles.
The Islander girls swim team placed third at state behind broken records, state titles and personal bests.
The undefeated Islander volleyball team has had just one problem this season: the third game. Time after time, Mercer Island takes a 2-0 lead only to let up and lose the third game. They nearly always win the fourth game but that third one has become superstitious for the team.
Mercer Island senior Rachel Godfred has achieved a lot in four years of swimming. Earning “Ironman” status all four seasons, winning a state title in the 200-yard individual medley during her junior year and being named team captain this year are just a few of her accomplishments. But nothing compared to Saturday’s performance during the state meet at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

The Islanders broke that dubious run Saturday evening as they crushed Eastside Catholic 3-0 to win the district title at West Seattle High School.

For the second year in a row, Mercer Island’s No. 1 doubles team has won the KingCo 3A title.
In one of the biggest surprises in Washington high school cross country history, the Mercer Island girls beat Seattle Prep to win the state title.
The Mercer Island girls swim team won the 3A district title on Saturday, scoring 269 points, beating next closest Bellevue by 56 points at Mary Wayte Pool.
For the first time in 11 years, the Mercer Island boys water polo team did not enter the state tournament as the No. 1 seed. But the Islanders did continue another streak, winning their ninth straight state title.
The Mercer Island volleyball team has been the picture of domination in league play during the past two seasons, and the 3A KingCo tournament on Friday and Saturday was no different. The Islanders won their second straight league tournament title by beating rival Mount Si, 3-1. The team also pushed its win streak against 3A KingCo opponents to 27 consecutive matches.
