The Mercer Island girls soccer team finally stopped its long five-game winless streak and fall from the top of the 3A KingCo league with a 2-0 victory against Interlake on Tuesday. The win clinches a playoff spot for the team, which went without a win since Oct. 9.
For the first time since 2001, both the boys and girls cross country teams will compete at the state meet, thanks to strong finishes at districts on Thursday at Lower Woodland Park. The girls team finished second to Seattle Prep (34) with a team score of 69 placing-points, while the boys placed third behind the Prep Panthers (43) and Bellevue (66) with 84 placing-points.
Halloween is a day full of ghosts and goblins. This year, the Mercer Island football team entered a foggy Juanita High School on Friday night, and it became a house of horrors following half time. Six turnovers for the Islanders, five on interceptions, resulted in a lopsided 45-14 loss to the Rebels.
The league championship meet for KingCo girls swimming was not the same as it had been in years past. With the league’s realignment during the off season, the meet has been transformed from a small meet of eight 3A KingCo teams to a large meet consisting of 18 teams from 2A, 3A and 4A. The only thing that has stayed the same is the venue, Mary Wayte Pool, and Mercer Island winning its eighth league title in as many years.

The Mercer Island girls soccer team finally stopped its long five game winless streak and fall from the top of the 3A KingCo league with a 2-0 victory against Interlake Tuesday. The win clinches a playoff spot for the team, which went without a win since September 23.
The Mercer Island girls’ soccer team continued to fall on Thursday, when they lost to Sammamish, 2-0. The loss put Mercer Island in jeopardy of missing the playoffs altogether after leading the division and being undefeated after six games. The loss was also Mercer Island’s fourth in five contests.
This year has not been easy for Sam Bliss. The senior began the season as the Mercer Island football team’s starting quarterback but was supplanted by freshman Jeff Lindquist. But multiple concussions and various other setbacks never knocked Bliss completely out, as he remained a leader on the team.
