Two days after losing its first game of the season, the Mercer Island girls soccer team traveled to Juanita High School, looking to get back on track. But the team struggled to connect on scoring opportunities and a lapse on defense resulted in a 1-1 tie.
The Mercer Island girls volleyball team took control of its own destiny on Monday as it defeated Mount Si, 3-1, at Mercer Island High School. The Islanders were led by Shayda Sanii and Janelle Chow, who combined for 25 of the Islanders’ first 50 points of the match.
Former Mercer Island High School and South Mercer Junior High wrestling coach and teacher, Paul Jackson, will be inducted into the Washington State Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame on Nov. 1.

The success of the Mercer Island volleyball team has been a surprise to some. Its undefeated record in eight matches, including a 3-0 win against Sammamish on Wednesday, was not necessarily expected after losing four key starters from the 2007 roster. One of those players who moved on was the team’s starting setter for three seasons. This year, sophomore Ariel Dewey has stepped into the position and the team has not lost a step.

The Nestlé company may think about suing the Mercer Island High School football team. The Islanders infringed on the company’s trademarked Butterfingers candy bar with seven turnovers on Friday when they lost at Interlake High School, 14-8.
After a big showing at the Thunderwolf Classic in Arizona, where the Islander girls swim team took second against 20 of the nation’s best teams, Mercer Island came back to Washington state and lost its first in-league meet in three years to Juanita High School, 95-88, on Sept. 23 at Juanita Pool.
