Some Islanders are wondering why the Mercer Island Center for the Arts has not reacted to recent misinformation promoted on Next Door and in letters to the Reporter. Our historic factual responses to this intentional campaign of deceit only resulted in opponents ignoring those facts, continuing unfounded speculation and often making personal attacks on our supporters.
Our community does not benefit from these negative tactics and in fact, is tired of them. Our supporters understand that MICA is a strong proponent of Mercerdale Park and is committed to designing a building that fits into the park setting and provides active uses for the entire community. Some who oppose building MICA at the site of the old recycling center continue to promote false information, including distribution of an inaccurate map. We will continue to focus on promoting the arts and building an amazing center for the arts on Mercer Island. Accurate information and updates regarding MICA are available on our website at www.mercerislandarts.org. We update the site regularly as more concrete information becomes available. Please also stop by our downtown office anytime with questions.
MICA is working with the city to complete the required SEPA review process, which includes environmental reviews and public feedback. The process of sharing information, getting feedback and adjusting plans will result in a project that will best meet community needs. Anyone who has been involved in a building/design project understands this iterative process takes longer than anyone would like. Rest assured we are moving forward. We will continue sharing the facts and appreciate the ongoing support of the Mercer Island community.
