When one religious group is attacked, all are attacked. The Mercer Island Clergy Association were shocked and horrified to hear of the vandalism to North West Yeshiva High School, St. Monica School and a public elementary school.
If the pages of the Reporter are any indication, the Island is likely to badly botch the integration of light rail into our transportation fabric. A story from early August highlights the wishful thinking on the part of some Island management. There’s hope that commuters will use shuttle vans to get to and from the North end park-and-ride. The same idea seems to be infiltrating nascent planning to accommodate light rail. In a more recent letter to the editor, Islander Julie Devine points out the obvious — that few people can tolerate the added commuting pain associated with shuttling to the North end.
I grew up on Mercer Island back in the ’60s and ’70s. Years later and after becoming a parent, I moved back to the Island, where I could be assured that my daughter would receive a good education. It’s nice to be back living on the Island as an adult and getting involved in this small-town community.
I heartily endorse the comments of Ken Lottis about the light at S.E. 40th Street and 86th Avenue S.E. I would, however, like to add an additional complaint.
During peak travel periods on S.E. 40th, the lights are heavily biased for east-westbound traffic. This appears to be around 6-9 a.m. and 3-6 p.m. This bias seems to exist daily, even on Saturday and Sunday, when normal traffic exists on 40th.
With classes resuming at the high school and the Boys and Girls Club open, I am wondering if city officials will be re-configuring the traffic light at the intersection of S.E. 40th Street and 86th Avenue S.E. Unless some changes are forthcoming, that intersection will become a major bottleneck and a danger to both drivers and pedestrians.
Mercer Island Special Olympic athletes, coaches and parents are pleased to thank Blair Rassmussen and the Boys and Girls Club for opening their door to our program. We started our season off with a “Hoe Down” dance and had a blast at the new facility. Even though the outside temperature was nearing 100 degrees, we stayed cool inside the air-conditioned rooms.

I have recently become aware of a memorial project in memory of Steve Haba that is proposed for Luther Burbank Park. The plan is to place it at the extreme north end of LBP on a pristine, grassy meadow. The memorial is to be a large 20-by-40-foot, almond-shaped cement pad.
At the Council meeting on June 21, Councilmembers Steve Litzow, Mike Cero, El Jahncke and Mike Grady voted to reallocate the ICW/Merrimount road funds for 2010 to repave residential streets in 2011. I have given up on my idea of community input (and politicians listening) when looking at the process that occurred to un-fund the ICW/Merrimount project.
