Kate Akyuz for City Council
It is with great enthusiasm that I encourage your vote for Kate Akyuz for City Council Position #6. Her life and career experiences shout out the value that she would bring to our Council. We have treasures to protect on Mercer Island and we have challenges to address. I find Kate well prepared and of a mind to do both. She has an impressive background in bringing people together to do good things. Her knowledge of local government is deep.
Kate is and forest and ecosystem scientist, a mother, and a Girl Scout leader. Her career in public service began with training thousands of volunteers in natural area restoration. Now, working for King County, she manages complex projects involving flood safety and habitat restoration in the Cedar River watershed. She knows procurement, permitting, public safety, and construction management. She speaks to community groups and elected leadership, bringing plain language and common sense solutions to challenging problems. Kate is persuasive enough to have won grants up to $5 million to acquire parks and restore natural areas. She knows how to foster public-private partnerships to work toward complex goals.
Kate is knocking on Islanders’ doors asking them how they’re doing and what changes they would like. One refrain is that people miss our traditional community gatherings. Kate would like to help bring people together, youth and adults, to restore community.
Kate intends to stabilize funding for Youth and Family Services counselors and to develop a community-supported vision for the Town Center. She would like to create incentives for middle-income housing for seniors, young professionals, and essential workers. She would like to establish a Parks Conservancy to restore and protect all forested parklands as well as improve our drinking water system.
Kate has put together a positive campaign with real substance. You can learn more, endorse, and support her at https://www.kateakyuz.com/
I think we need Kate’s particular character, experience, and intentions on our City Council. Please join me in voting for Kate Akyuz!
