Eddie Carden, son of Ann and Jim Carden, and Christina Culver, daughter of Peggy Fuller and Doug Culver, were honored at a recent Rotary luncheon as “Islanders of the Month.” The Mercer Island High School students were honored for the month of February.
Carden, a national merit semifinalist, member of the National Honor Society and editor-in-chief of the Mercer High Times, has been active as co-captain of the varsity swim team and in junior varsity soccer and water polo. He has been a leader in the Bridges 2 advisory program and a trumpet section leader in the MIHS marching band wind ensemble. Carden was named a Masonic Lodge outstanding junior, and worked with the Natural Helpers as well. His community activities include working on the Youth Advisory Board as vice-chair for Mercer Island Youth and Family Services. Carden also participated in many MIYFS projects, such as the Christmas tree sale, fashion show, Rotary Run, Auction and IMS visits. He participated in the VOICE program for four years, and in the Presbyterian Church Mexico mission trip. He has been a lifeguard at the Mercer Island Beach Club and on the club’s summer swim team. Carden also participated in Relay for Life. His hobbies include biking and snowboarding. His future plans are to attend a four-year university to study journalism, psychology and pre-law.
Culver, a National Honor society member, has been involved in the symphonic orchestra and Bridges advisory program. Her community and church activities include working with the Girl Scouts as an assistant leader and cooking at local camps, as well as working with the Hand in Hand program. Her hobbies include dog sledding, backpacking and hiking, kayaking and canoeing, skiing and traveling. Her future plans are to attend a four-year liberal arts college.
