As the 2018 Olympic Winter Games kicked off last week, a local retirement community in Mercer Island decided to host its own competition inspired by the events in PyeongChang, South Korea.
The “Shores Winter Olympics” began at Covenant Shores on Feb. 5. Fitness Coordinator Mihaela Dimitriu planned the games and choreographed the opening ceremony.
Other staff members also got into the Olympic spirit. New Executive Director Bob Howell kicked off the torch relay and Chaplain Greg Asimakoupoulos wore his 1992 Albertville jacket, found at a thrift store, to offer the invocation.
“Unite all our campus through game,” Asimakoupoulos recited. “With fun competition, infuse us with joy, as we make health and fitness our aim.”
About 40 participants registered for eight sport events: javelin, weightlifting, “Up and Go,” “Sit To Stand,” beanbag shooting, basketball, cross-lodge ski biathlon and bocce ball.
The closing ceremonies were set for Feb. 13.
