Jens Aoyama and Jonathan Mak, second graders at Lakeridge Elementary, decided to host a lemonade and rice krispy treat stand in their driveway to raise money for the Mercer Island food pantry on June 3.
The sale was part of the students’ giraffe club project.
“Thanks to many friends, neighbors, family and baseball players, the boys raised over $200 in just two hours,” Kirsten Aoyama, Jens’ mom, wrote in an email to the Reporter.
The mailman stopped by to take a lemonade break, along with another special guest.
“A highlight for the boys was when Anthony from Sahara pizza stopped by to donate his tip money and offered them a free pizza,” Aoyama said. “Within 15 minutes they were enjoying hot, fresh pizza. What a supportive and generous community we live in.”
