A new tea shop, Tea Treasures, is open at the Avellino Apartments building at 2836 78th Ave. S.E. The shop opened on May 1 and offers a variety of teas such as ambrosia, jasmine and Irish Breakfast, and classes about the history of tea.
“It has to do with culture, being social — everything that tea is,” said owner Elizabeth Borges, who has experience in both the tour and restaurant arenas. “Tea is culture. Every country is completely different [in how it serves tea].” Borges is originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Tea history classes, followed by a tea tasting, will be held at 3 p.m. on Sundays through May at the shop, which will celebrate its grand opening in June. In the near future, Borges plans to hold classes on how tea is served in various countries.
