Artist displays ‘the richness of our community’ in city design

Boating, sculptures, music, parks, a farmers market and much more.

Those are just a handful of the 20 vibrant, diverse and inspirational features that have immensely and profoundly affected artist Ashley Dimick since she moved to Mercer Island with her husband in 2021.

When the city and the Mercer Island Arts Council announced a competition for amateur and professional artists to devise a design to highlight city events, Dimick was all in.

Her winning submission will premiere on Summer Celebration 2023 T-shirts and will further be used for various merchandise options throughout the year.

“Designers were asked to reflect the spirit of Mercer Island, love for the community and what Mercer Island means to the artist,” according to the city.

Dimick, an architect for ZGF in Seattle, explained her design: “Each circle holds a unique icon creating a mosaic to showcase the richness of our community. Putting each symbol in a circle creates a clean composition and reflects the unity you can feel on the Island.”

Through her artistry, Dimick felt she could get involved in the community as the Island continues to grow a special place in her heart and provide her peace and calmness, she said. Special moments for Dimick in her Island retreat are crossing the bridge, checking to see if Mount Rainier is out and enjoying a sunset walk around Luther Burbank Park.

“This was a great opportunity to contribute my creative passion and create something to represent some of the great things about Mercer Island and its residents,” she said.
