The Mercer Island baseball team qualified for the playoffs for the second time in 10 years by earning the sixth and final seed in the 3A KingCo league.
But the team’s 1-5 record to finish the regular season is a concern as the Islanders lost twice last week.
The Islanders took on Skyline, Wednesday, and lost 4-3 despite pitcher Chris Black’s complete game.
Mercer Island fell behind 4-0 before scoring three runs during the bottom of the fifth inning. The Islander offense was led by Ben Shoemaker, who went 2-for-3, and Joey Scalzo, who finished with a run scored and an RBI.
The Islanders’ other loss last week came on April 29 as they were beat by Issaquah 9-3. Shoemaker and teammate David Courtney led the team at the plate, each going 2-for-3.
The Islanders took on the Eagles during the first round of the playoffs on Tuesday (after Reporter deadline). With a win, Mercer Island will take on Newport tomorrow at 4 p.m. at Bannerwood.
