Judge/Cero contest a close one

As of early Wednesday morning, the race between Mike Cero and Maureen Judge was separated by less than 200 votes while Bruce Bassett held a commanding 800-vote lead over Patti Darling for yesterday’s City Council elections.
The latest election results published by the county’s elections office came in just after 1 a.m., Wednesday morning. Nearly 33 percent of registered Island voters’ ballots had been counted at that time. In 2005, the last Mercer Island City Council election, over 63 percent of registered Island voters cast their ballot.
With the early lead, Bassett has nearly 60 percent of the vote for Position 5, getting 2681 votes. His opponent, Darling, trailed with 1850 votes. In the Council’s other contest, Cero was leading Judge for Position 3 by as little as 4 percent, 52 to 48 percent. Cero had collected 2425 votes while 2231 votes had gone to Judge.
Current Councilmembers Steve Litzow and El Jahncke were re-elected in unopposed races.
According to the King County Elections Department Web site, updated results will be published daily at 4:30 p.m., except Monday, Nov. 12, in honor of Veterans Day. The election is expected to be officially certified by Nov. 27.
