For the first time in three years and only the second time in 11 years, the Mercer Island boys lacrosse team will not be playing the state championship game.
Bellevue won the state semifinal match against Mercer Island on Wednesday night 13-2.
Bellevue quickly dominated the first quarter, scoring four goals, while the Wolverines defense kept the Islanders from hitting the net.
Hayden Reisman was the first, and only, Islander to score during the game. His first goal came with 3:59 left in the half. By then Bellevue held a 7-1 lead. Not to be outdone, Bellevue added another point with minutes of Reisman’s to hold an 8-1 advantage at halftime.
After the break, Bellevue’s surge continued with two more unanswered points on the boat. Reisman scored the final Islander goal of the night with just 4.7 seconds left in the third quarter. The score was 11-2.
The Islanders defensive line held strong in the final minutes of the game, allowing only two more points for Bellevue, but Mercer Island’s offense couldn’t break through on the opposite end.
Bellevue moves forward to play in Saturday’s state championship game against Eastside Catholic, which beat King’s Way in Wednesday’s other semifinal game. The game is set for 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 26 in Memorial Stadium in downtown Seattle.
Mercer Island finished the season with a 12-2 regular season record and 14-6 overall.
