Bon issues proclamation ending Island water supply emergencies

A fortnight after the city of Mercer Island apprised residents and businesses that they could resume normal water use, it proclaimed the conclusion of state of local emergencies regarding a pipeline leak and potable water supply to the area.

Mercer Island City Manager Jessi Bon issued Proclamation No. 344 on Aug. 15 related to the Seattle Public Utilities main water pipeline leak that resulted in the Island receiving water from a smaller backup supply line for 120 days.

On the afternoon of Aug. 1, the city informed Islanders that repairs and quality testing were completed for the main water supply line and it was returned to service. The leak occurred on April 3 near 95th Court Southeast.

Bon declared that emergency proclamations No. 327 (April 3) and No. 329 (May 1) are now unneeded following the main pipeline restoration.

“During this time of reduced water supply, the community successfully curtailed water use to maintain adequate levels in the Island’s reservoirs. The city sincerely thanks our residents and businesses for their hard work throughout this emergency,” the city said.
