You, too, could be cooking with Julia.
Julia Childs’ autographed cookbook, that is.
The Mercer Island Friends of the Library silent auction is underway, and this year’s selection includes a few unique copies, including an autographed copy of “In Julia’s Kitchen with Master Chefs” and an autographed copy of Bill Gates’ “The Road Ahead.” Just over 100 books are included in the auction and are on display at the Mercer Island Library.
Childs’ signature is verified by Friends member Jane Nelson, the previous owner of the cookbook, who donated it to the auction. She acquired the book while on assignment for the Mercer Island Reporter about seven to 10 years ago, she said.
Former Mercer Island Reporter editor Jane Meyer Brahm assigned the story to the former feature column writer, who also enjoyed cooking.
During a promotional tour, held in the KCTS building in downtown Seattle, Nelson tasted many of the cookbook recipes during an informal breakfast served buffet-style. Of all the different dishes, she remembers the oatmeal as her favorite.
Although Childs played a very small physical role during the benefit, when it came time for Nelson to have her book signed, she said Childs was very down to earth.
“She demystified herself,” she said of Childs, who was “Twinkly, with a wonderful sense of humor.”
As a young homemaker, Nelson said she “faithfully” watched Childs’ cooking program.
A signed copy of “In Julia’s Kitchen with Master Chefs” lists for $400 or more online; however, the Friends’ starting bid is listed at $250. The silent auction will run through Oct. 31.
The Mercer Island Friends of the Library will also hold its Fall Book Sale on Oct. 21 from 5 to 9 p.m., for Friends of the Library members only. The sale will be open to everyone from Friday, Oct. 22, through Sunday, Oct. 24, during normal library hours. The sale includes more than 10,000 books of all genres, in addition to other media items. Most books will be priced between 50 cents and $2.
