Boys swim earns 10th KingCo title

For the 10th straight year, the Mercer Island High School boys swim and dive team has a KingCo title. The team, which many thought might flounder this season after losing so many talented seniors to graduation last spring, proved once again that it is tough to beat.

The Islanders beat out the competition with another first-place finish, showing up the second-place team, Garfield, by 444 points, despite winning only four events.

Mercer Island relay teams earned titles in the 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle, while Ian Fisk won the 500 freestyle. The 400 freestyle relay team also set a meet record of 3:18.08 by Kyle Moline, Duncan Howard, Theo Danciu and Andy Wingerson. The old record, set in 2009 by the previous MI team, was 3:18.37.

The team also qualified three of the six Islander divers for the district competition, according to diving coach Penny Yantis.

The district meet swim finals will take place on Saturday, Feb. 13, at the Mary Wayte Pool beginning at 5:30 p.m.
