Two vehicles were prowled on Friday night, Oct. 5, on the street in front of the victim’s residence in the 4100 block of 96th Avenue S.E., in a Mercerwood neighborhood. Suspects smashed the front passenger window of the Toyota Camry to gain access, and entered the Hummer through the unlocked rear door. $3,255 worth of items were stolen from the vehicles, including gift certificates, rent checks, clothes, tools, a drill, grinder, rotary hammer and bits, Apple power adapters, portable USB drives and a briefcase. One of the victims is a resident of Denver.

By the numbers: September

The Mercer Island Police Department reported 22 arrests in September and 972 total calls for service. There were five burglaries, 18 thefts and one auto theft, in addition to one rape and one assault. Police reported 16 total accidents, seven people injured and three DUI arrests. Police issued 256 total citations, including 71 parking citations.

Oct. 1

Burglary: Someone ransacked a residence in the 3600 block of 90th Avenue S.E., near Shorewood Heights, while the resident was away from home between 9:45 a.m. and 12:57 p.m. Sterling silver flatware and jewelry were stolen, along with a passport, cash and blank checks. The resident stated that she was sure she had locked the house before leaving, but has had trouble with a back door’s lock. Entry did not appear to be forced. Fingerprints were lifted for evidence.

Accident: A BMW struck a tree at 10:30 p.m. in the 7300 block of 86th Avenue S.E. The driver, a 20-year-old Mercer Island resident, was cited for failing to notify the property owner of the accident and damage. One passenger was present, and the vehicle was heavily damaged on the front end.

Oct. 2

Fender-bender: A vehicle rear-ended a Ford Explorer that was stopped at a pedestrian signal-controlled crosswalk at 3:16 p.m. in the 4200 block of Island Crest Way. The driver, 18, said she didn’t see that the other vehicle had stopped. She was cited for negligent driving. Both vehicles buckled at the points of impact, and the Ford Explorer was towed from the scene after it could not be restarted.

Oct. 3

Burglaries: $7,200 worth of items were stolen from a home in the 8500 block of S.E. 73rd Street, in a neighborhood between Wildwood Park and Islander Middle School. The burglary occurred sometime between 8 a.m. and 12:20 p.m. Entry was likely made through a garage window. A wedding ring was stolen, along with pearl strands and other assorted jewelry, an iPod Touch, headphones and cover, and cash and coins.

A home in the 2200 block of 72nd Avenue S.E., adjacent to the Park on the Lid, was burglarized sometime between 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. while the residents were gone. The couple found their front door ajar when they returned. Jewelry was stolen out of the master bedroom, and a laptop was also missing.

Oct. 5

Bike theft: Two bicycles were stolen out of a driveway in the 6100 block of 93rd Avenue S.E. sometime overnight on Sept. 28. One bicycle was later recovered in the 6800 block of East Mercer Way.

Malicious mischief: A 63-year-old man reported graffiti sprayed onto a wooden fence on the property of St. Monica Catholic Church in the 4300 block of 88th Avenue S.E.

Fraud: Someone made multiple unauthorized charges, totaling $1,000, on a 60-year-old Mercer Island man’s credit card at south King County businesses between Sept. 26 and Sept. 29.

Arrest: Police arrested a 17-year-old teen at 9:37 p.m. in the 7800 block of S.E. 28th Street on an outstanding misdemeanor warrant. He was released per juvenile court at the police station, according to the case report.

Oct. 6

Arrest: A 28-year-old man was arrested and booked into the King County Jail by Shoreline police after 10:09 p.m. on an outstanding Mercer Island misdemeanor warrant.

DUI: Police stopped a vehicle for not having a muffler at 3 a.m. in the 2700 block of Island Crest Way and arrested the driver, who had an outstanding warrant and had been drinking. The driver, 55, failed standard sobriety tests and was booked into the Issaquah Jail. Receipts from a nightclub, from that night, were taken into evidence.

Accident: A Lexus SUV did not stop at a stop sign in the intersection of S.E. 29th Street and 77th Avenue S.E., and T-boned another vehicle in the middle of the intersection at 11:14 a.m. The 73-year-old driver of the SUV was cited for failing to stop, and her vehicle was towed.

License plate theft: Someone stole a rear license plate from a Ford Windstar, sometime after the evening of Oct. 5, in the 6600 block of S.E. 24th Street.

Drugs: Police found a young man unconscious inside his vehicle, with the headlights on, at 11:53 p.m. in the QFC parking lot at 7823 S.E. 28th Street. Drug paraphernalia was in plain view and police detected an odor of marijuana. Police searched the vehicle with the driver’s consent and arrested the driver, 17, for being in possession of drugs and paraphernalia. The driver was released to his father later.

Oct. 7

Assault: A 48-year-old Redmond woman sought help at a stranger’s house, to call 911, after being assaulted by a Mercer Island man, 58, after 12 p.m. at a South end residence during an argument. The victim was not injured. The suspect told police that a diabetic episode caused him to black out and he did not remember the incident. Fire department first responders at the scene determined that the suspect’s condition should be evaluated at a hospital.

Boat adrift: The Marine Patrol recovered a 12-foot, unidentified aluminum vessel that washed ashore in Renton sometime after Oct. 1.

Oct. 8

Lost mail: A 71-year-old Mercer Island woman found mail in some bushes in the 9600 block of Mercerwood Drive at 2 p.m. The mail — six pieces, total — was addressed to a recipient in Seattle and was given to the post office for redelivery.
