The decision by the MI City Council to approve locking the high school field is the action of a group that takes the attitude that the taxpayers’ money is really their money and the public has no say on the matter.
While the superintendent claims the need to protect the students and cites the four Lakewood police officers as justification, where was all this concern when the shootings at Columbine occurred in 1999?
The people who use the field shouldn’t be held responsible for the school district’s inability to find a business that does a quality job of installing field turf, just like the people who the school district hired to returf the grass field in 1980 and ended up turning the middle of it into a sand trap.
So for those people who already pay for a field that they should be able to use for free, I hope you enjoy it when you go to the trouble of driving up to the field and then find out your access card that you pay $5 a year for doesn’t work.
