The City of Mercer Island will be conducting a field survey of road conditions through August, as part of the city’s long-term planning efforts.

As part of the city’s work on long-term plans and budgets for roadway maintenance around the Island, the city has contracted with Infrastructure Management Services, a private company, to do a detailed inventory in two phases.

The first phase will measure pavement roughness, rutting, cracking and other surface distresses using a special van which will also capture video and tracks exact location using GPS. The van will be traveling all public Island roads in August.

The second phase will include establishing the load carrying capacity of specific arterial and collector roadways using several devices which measure thickness.

All work is expected to by done by Aug. 30.

Once the data is gathered, the city will be able to use the information to prioritize key areas for long-term work.
