A vehicle collision that turned into multiple car fires resulted in an initial full blockage of eastbound Interstate 90 between Mercer Island and Bellevue during this morning’s commute.

According to the Bellevue Fire Department — which had crews on scene along with Mercer Island fire crews — two patients sustained injuries and were transported to local hospitals. Its social media pages also said that crews were dispatched to the area of eastbound I-90 near Bellevue Way.

Eastside Fire Fighters (EFF) praised the heroic work of one of its off-duty members, Tom Tull, who paired with a bystander to pull one of the victims from their burning truck. On social media, EFF reported that Tull encountered the accident while driving to work, and the duo broke a window to rescue the entrapped driver.

“We are so proud of you Brother! Thank you for your continued service to our many communities!” EFF said.

In a 10:06 a.m. social media update, Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) noted that all eastbound I-90 lanes were reopened.

“Big thanks to all the responding aid crews for their work on this, and to all drivers for their patience and cooperation,” WSDOT said.

The Mercer Island Police Department coordinated with WSDOT and the Bellevue Fire Department during the incident, and Island city streets were backed up during the active scene. Members of the State Patrol were also on scene and helping determine the cause of the accident.

At 8 a.m., according to WSDOT, traffic was backed up for about four miles and extended to the 520 bridge over Lake Washington. In an earlier post, WSDOT said that eastbound I-90 was fully blocked on the East Channel Bridge, just east of the East Mercer Way on-ramp.
