Several maintenance and road construction projects will get underway this month, including the installation of pedestrian signals on Island Crest Way, and the yearly pothole repair project.

In mid-August, the City will begin work to make improvements to two crosswalks on Island Crest Way as part of a series of capital improvement projects scheduled this summer. The focus of the improvements will be on increasing safety for pedestrians crossing Island Crest Way.

The City will install two new pedestrian signals at S.E. 42th and S.E. 47th Streets. The signals, when activated by a pedestrian, will cycle to red to stop traffic on Island Crest Way to allow for safe crossing. During all other times the signal will rest in green allowing traffic to flow north and south on Island Crest unimpeded. The project includes construction of a new sidewalk on the east side of Island Crest at S.E. 47th Street where none currently exists. In addition, lighting will be enhanced at both locations.

The pothole project began Aug. 1 with asphalt spot repairs in neighborhoods across the Island. The city’s maintenance department and it’s contractor hope to have the project completed by the end of September, weather permitting.

The city reminds drivers to be aware while driving during August and to stay alert for lane closures and road restrictions during the work.
