Crews from Shannon & Wilson and KPG Psomas are currently conducting geotechnical investigations and a topographical survey at Mercerdale Park as part of a sewer line replacement in the area.
During their field work, the crews are digging holes — known as borings — utilizing a mammoth blue track-mounted rig to map the soil conditions for environmental permitting, trench work and potential drainage improvements, according to the city.
The city’s Let’s Talk page explains that most of the city’s wastewater system was installed in the 1950s and 1960s; as this collection system ages and degrades, the pipes are susceptible to excess groundwater and stormwater entering the system. Replacing these lines ensures the city’s infrastructure can provide sufficient capacity and will last into the future.
Crews are expected to be on site during working hours this week and no impacts to the park or park users are anticipated.
