Cross country girls first, boys second at Juanita
The Mercer Island girls cross country team edged Bellevue to place first at their meet with the Worlverines and the Juanita Rebels Wednesday at St. Edwards State Park. Mercer Island finished with a team score of 28, with Bellevue posting a score of 29. Juanita placed third at 83.
Mercer Island had six runners finish in the top ten. Cece Rosenman finished second (19:40), Chloe Michaels was fifth (20:07), Alexa Bauman placed sixth (20:15), Mary Rose Vu was seventh (20:37), Kayla Lee was eighth (20:39) and Elly McMillan placed tenth (20:47). Bellevue’s Katherine Penner won with a time of 19:34.
The Mercer Island boys finished second as a team with a score of 53, behind Juanita (22) and ahead of Bellevue (59). Three Islanders placed in the top ten, with Ben Stoops finishing second (17:03), Tiger McBurney coming in ninth (17:48) and Nate Benson placing tenth (17:54). Juanita’s Tom Mikkelson placed first with a time of 16:52.
Mercer Island will take on Sammamish at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23 at Robbinswood Park.
Volleyball sweeps Liberty
Mercer Island volleyball earned its first league win of the season, beating Liberty 25-15, 25-23, 28-26 Tuesday at Liberty High School.
Jemma Yeadon posted 25 kills, 10 digs, a block and two aces for the Islanders. Natalie Robinson had 43 assists, two kills, four digs and a block, and Tess Hendelman had 20 digs.
The Islanders will take on Bellevue at 7 p.m. tonight at MIHS.
Roosevelt drops boys water polo to 0-2
After claiming a single-goal lead in the opening quarter of its contest against Roosevelt, Mercer Island boys water polo saw its offense come to a screeching halt against the Roughridgers, falling to Roosevelt 7-3 Monday night at Mercer Island Country Club.
The Islanders led 3-2 after the first quarter, but the Roosevelt defense clamped down to hold Mercer Island scoreless through the final three periods. The Roughriders broke a 3-3 halftime tie with four goals in the third quarter to come away with the win, dropping the Islanders to 0-2 this season. The Islanders previously fell to Curtis 19-8 on Sept. 8.
Jake Gordon scored three goals to lead Roosevelt. Ford Witman scored twice for the Islanders, while Sammy Vacca posted a goal and Hunter Peshkin had 11 saves in the net.
Next, the Islanders will take on reigning state champs Bellevue at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22 at Mercer Island Country Club.
