Cross-country season ends at District meet

Season ends for boys and girls teams, top 20 runners advance to state championships.

The Mercer Island cross-country squads competed in the Sea King District 2 meet Thursday, Oct. 31 at Lake Sammamish State Park. Four teams from KingCo along with eight from the Metro league competed for four berths into the state meet to be held this week in Pasco, Wash.

The Mercer Island boys cross country team finished 9th with a team score of 223. Junior Dylan Lesko advanced to the 3A WIAA state championships for Mercer Island by finishing in the top 20, placing 16th. He was followed by Nathan Cummings (33), Eric Schulz (60th), Nathan Gallatin (64th), Tiger McBurney (66th), Daniel Mayer (68th) and Teddy Larkin (71st).

The girls team just missed making a state berth, placing fifth with a team score of 125. They were led by sophomore Alexa Bauman, who finished 14th. She was followed by Cecelia Rosenman (18), Linden Elggren (25), Sarah Bjarnason (42), Sydney Zeldes (43), Rachel Van Gelder (45), and Alida Scalzo (61). Bauman and Rosenman will compete in the state championships as well.

The 3A WIAA state championships will be Saturday, Nov. 9 at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.
