Dancing for peace at Island event

Attendees at the Rotary Club of Mercer Island’s International Dance for Peace form a spontaneous conga line while children dance to live world music on Sept. 18 at the Mercer Island Community and Event Center. The event, which drew about 300 people and was billed as an “All Island Dance Party,” raised a significant amount of money to support international grants and humanitarian aid, including ones for Ukraine. Multiple Ukrainians who live on Mercer Island attended the event and met each other. The event replaced the Rotary half marathon, which had to be canceled due to COVID, and featured world music, a homemade-cookie table, a Drum Roll wine bar and multigenerational attendees from children to grandparents. The amount raised was not available at press time. To donate, visit www.mirotarydance.org. Photo courtesy of John Hamer
