A Mercer Island man fell asleep at the wheel and was arrested for DUI at 1:43 a.m. on New Year’s Day, Jan. 1. Police observed his vehicle, a Pontiac, being passed by other vehicles while stopped at a stop light during several changes of the light in the 8400 block of S.E. 40th Street. The vehicle continued running, in drive, after the man, 21, fell asleep.
He failed voluntary field sobriety tests and refused a portable breath test. Police found marijuana in the driver’s jacket pocket and backpack, which also contained a box of cigars. After being arrested, he was released to his mother, and his vehicle was towed.
Dec. 27
Broken door: A glass panel in a front storm door at an elderly woman’s residence in the 3400 block of 72nd Avenue S.E. was broken by an unknown object. The estimated repair cost is $150.
Dec. 28
Fraud: A 39-year-old resident of 80th Avenue S.E. reported at 8:59 a.m. that a fraudulent charge was attempted on her debit card on Dec. 22. She canceled the card, and there was no loss.
Arrest: A Seattle woman, 21, was arrested for assault at 11:15 a.m. in the 8600 block of North Mercer Way. The woman had admittedly slapped her mother, a Mercer Island resident, during an argument. The daughter was arraigned and released.
Dec. 29
Malicious mischief: $750 worth of damage was done to a Ford truck when it was keyed by an unknown suspect sometime during the past week. A resident of 80th Place S.E. reported the incident.
Dec. 30
DUI: A Mercer Island man, 36, was arrested after hitting a parked car at 12:28 a.m. on 90th Avenue S.E. He struck a legally parked vehicle, a BMW, after turning right onto 90th from Shorewood Drive. He failed standard field sobriety tests and was later released to another adult. His vehicle was towed from the scene.
Arrest: An Auburn man, 31, was arrested at 9:03 a.m. in the 4800 block of West Mercer Way after being stopped for a traffic infraction. The police officer attempted multiple times to get the driver’s name, but the driver gave false information. He was arrested for obstructing police and No Valid Operator’s License without ID. Police did a search incident to arrest and found the driver’s wallet, which contained his license. The man was driving with a suspended license and had four Failure to Appears on record. He was taken to the MIPD and the municipal court.
Arrest: A Seatac man, 24, driving a stolen vehicle, a Toyota Camry, was arrested at 12:20 p.m. in the 8300 block of S.E. 26th Street. He was driving with a suspended license. Police contacted the vehicle’s registered owner, a Federal Way resident, but whether or not the driver had permission to use the vehicle could not be determined.
Trespass: An 18-year-old male confronted an unknown person at his residence at 1 p.m. in the 5300 block of 90th Avenue S.E.
Bullet hole: A suspected bullet left a hole in the front window of a residence in the 6100 block of S.E. 30th Street. A second hole was found in the wall along the projectile’s path of travel, and a metallic fragment was embedded in insulation near the punctured drywall section. The next door neighbor thought he heard a gunshot two days prior around midnight, but said it could have been part of a dream. The case has been referred to investigations.
Car prowl: A woman’s purse was stolen out of an unlocked vehicle between 10:15 and 11:30 p.m. in the 2700 block of 71st Avenue S.E. A “Smart” key to the vehicle, a Toyota Highlander, was also stolen with other items, including cash taken out of the center console. The purse contained $12 in cash, debit and credit cards, and a driver’s license. Some items were recovered in the street one block away. There are no suspects, but latent prints were taken from the front passenger door. The case has been referred to investigations.
Dec. 31
DUI: Police stopped a vehicle with a broken front bumper dragging on the ground in the 2200 block of West Mercer Way. The driver, a 22-year-old Redmond woman, had been drinking and was arrested at 1:57 a.m. after failing standard field sobriety tests. The vehicle, a Mercedes-Benz, was impounded and the driver was released to a friend.
Reckless burning: A burning paper sack containing firecrackers and excrement was placed on the front porch of a residence in the 9200 block of S.E. 46th Street at 10 p.m. on Dec. 30. The resident, a 47-year-old man, reported the incident at 10:46 a.m.
Fraud: A Mercer Island man, 62, reported fraudulent ATM charges on his Chase business account at 11:44 a.m. Three charges happened in Mukilteo, the location of the man’s rental house, and two were on Mercer Island. The charges were made on the man’s business debit card, still in his possession, on Dec. 11-12.
Fender-bender: A vehicle entered the wrong direction of the I-90 freeway at East Mercer Way, turning westbound onto the eastbound on-ramp at 5:04 p.m. The driver, an elderly Mercer Island woman, “panicked” and put her vehicle in reverse, then backed into an SUV that was stopped. The bumpers and fenders of both vehicles were damaged on impact.
Liquor violation: A Redmond girl, 15, lost consciousness after drinking in the Luther Burbank Park parking lot in the 2600 block of 84th Avenue S.E. with two other juveniles. Police responded after receiving a call from one juvenile at 10:12 p.m. reporting the girl unconscious. She was transported to Overlake Hospital, and the other teens were released to their parents.
Jan. 1
Car prowl: An unlocked Lexus was prowled in the 8000 block of S.E. 70th Place sometime between 2 and 9 a.m. No items were taken, and there was no damage.
Pedestrian hit: A Mercer Island man, 86, was hit by a vehicle at 5:49 p.m. while crossing S.E. 27th Street in the 7600 block. The man was not in a crosswalk. The driver, a 28-year-old Seattle man in a Honda Civic, said he was driving 15 to 20 mph and he did not see the pedestrian until the man entered the lane. Mercer Island Fire examined the pedestrian, who sustained a head laceration, and transported him to Overlake Hospital.
Jan. 2
DUI: Two Mercer Island males, 17 and 18, were arrested for DUI and minor in possession after 4:30 a.m. in the 4700 block of Island Crest Way after being stopped for a traffic infraction. Police found they had been drinking. The driver refused field tests, and the passenger admitted to consuming alcohol. As the passenger stepped out of the vehicle, police saw a box of beer and a wine bottle inside the truck. The alcohol, including three unopened beers, was removed from the vehicle.
Fraud: Unauthorized charges were made on a 49-year-old Mercer Island man’s credit card sometime after Dec. 30 and were reported at 11:24 a.m.
Jan. 3
Arrest: A Pullman man, 20, was arrested at 1 a.m. on the North end at eastbound I-90 after being stopped for a traffic infraction. Police detected a strong odor of marijuana in the vehicle. A glass pipe and small bottle of marijuana were found on the driver, and multiple bottles of beer were in the back seat of the vehicle, a Mercury Mountaineer. The driver was taken to the MIPD, where he was cited and released.
Missing person: A Mercer Island woman reported at 7:39 a.m. that a 63-year-old friend was missing in Virginia. The friend, a woman, was in contact with her mother in Korea by mail before she went missing in 2007. The case was forwarded to Virginia police for follow-up.
Arrest: A Mercer Island man, 21, was arrested at 6:42 p.m. in the 8200 block of S.E. 24th Street. He violated a court protection order against a teenager and obstructed police by resisting arrest. A 40-year-old Mercer Island man reported the violation. The suspect was in possession of syringes and suboxone films, and suspected heroin residue was found on a scale and a spoon.
Accident: A two-car accident occurred at 5:50 p.m. in the 4000 block of Island Crest Way. Two vehicles turned left from S.E. 40th Street onto ICW in separate turn lanes, but one vehicle, a Nissan Exterra, changed lanes after turning and struck the second vehicle, a BMW sedan. The driver of the Nissan said that he did not see the other vehicle as he merged. He was cited for the unsafe lane change and for having an expired proof of insurance. Both drivers’ statements matched the damages.
Fraud: $1,033 was fraudulently charged on the East Coast to a 53-year-old Mercer Island man’s credit card to purchase an airline ticket on Dec. 23. The fraud was reported at 3:54 p.m.
