The new playground at Luther Burbank Park near the Parks and Recreation building is nearly complete.
An official ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 10, with speakers, key supporters, Councilmembers and the mayor. The community is invited to attend, and tour the playground. Light refreshments will be provided.
The aging play structure at Luther Burbank Park has been replaced with new equipment, as part of the 2013-2014 Capital Improvement Program. There is a new zip line, climbing web, improved slides, merry go-round, and safety surfacing. The walkway and finishing details are still being completed, but the new playground is open.
Benches and picnic tables are expected to arrive in early October. There will also be a volunteer planting project from the Mercer Island Lion’s Club.
The project, which started in May, was funded by private donations and a public-private partnership with the Mercer Island Preschool Association.
