Fire crews extinguish second-alarm house blaze

Approximately 50 firefighters were on the scene at the apex of a second-alarm house fire in the 3800 block of West Mercer Way in the early morning of Nov. 24.

Crews from Mercer Island, Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond and Eastside — the outside crews under mutual aid agreements — extinguished the blaze, which began at 4:47 a.m. The residence was unoccupied and there were no injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and undetermined at this time. A three-person fire engine crew remained on scene to watch for any reemergence of flames or smoke for approximately 24 hours or until it was deemed no longer necessary.

In total, there were seven fire engines, three ladder trucks, two battalion chiefs, one medical service officer, two aid units, one medic unit and one air unit involved. Since the site was difficult to assess and the house had complex construction, the incident commander upgraded the fire to second alarm and called in the extra units.

West Mercer Way was closed near the burned home for most of the day.
