The city of Mercer Island is partnering with Evolve Events to present a new Let’s Move event: Fitness Revolution. It will be a day of workouts, nutrition sessions and healthy living seminars from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 22 at the Community and Event Center.
Julie Lawrence and Vicky Savage, both longtime trainers at Gold’s Gym, created Evolve Events to empower people to lead an active, healthy and happy lifestyle, to instill confidence in embracing the life they have been given and to inspire the courage to pursue and achieve sustainable change.
Fitness Revolution was created from the idea that there could be one area where people could go and learn about different aspects of exercise, nutrition and a healthy mindset.
“We want to make people feel good about where they’re at now, and not bad about what they’re not good at,” Savage said. “We’re not trying to go into the next bikini competition; we’re just trying to live a balanced and healthy life.”
The event will be welcoming, upbeat, social and fun, Savage said, and will focus on ways to meet realistic, achievable health goals in today’s busy lifestyle.
“The reason we call ourselves ‘evolve’ is because evolution takes time,” Savage said, noting that after going through a weight loss journey herself, she felt inspired to share her knowledge and empower people to make small changes that lead to long-term progress.
“There’s no such thing as a 30-day miracle detox diet,” she said.
The schedule for Fitness Revolution is packed, so participants can pick and choose and go to the sessions they find interesting.
Sessions include fitness classes taught by instructors at local gyms Mercer Island Crossfit and Dailey Method, cooking classes about weekly food preparation and eating “healthy in a hurry” and seminars on proper running techniques, stretching, hints and tips for fit families, staying healthy for the holidays and mental, emotional, physical and spiritual balance, to name a few.
With different levels available for each workout, the event is not just for fitness gurus, but for everyone who wants to learn more about healthy living and the resources available in their community, said Diane Mortenson, the city’s recreation superintendent.
It’s also a great way to get a jump on New Year’s resolutions, Mortenson said.
“What we don’t want is everyone going to the gym in January thinking they’re going to lose 20 pounds, again,” Savage said. “If we do little things here and there, we’ll be in a much better place come January.”
Savage said she hopes Fitness Revolution will be a gathering of like-minded people working on their goals as a team.
“It’s all about the celebration of who we are and where we can go from here,” Savage said.
The regular ticket price is $85. Mercer Island residents receive a discount of 20 percent with the promo code MERCER. For more, including the event schedule, see www.evolvefitnessevents.com.
