Football finishes 2009 season with big win

It might not have been exactly the season that the Mercer Island football team wanted. There were ups and downs as the young team dealt with injuries, sickness and a new coaching regime, but on Friday, the Islanders found a bright spot and beat Chief Sealth, 49-0, in a non-league crossover game.

The Islanders, who finished their season 4-6, kept the Seahawks scoreless throughout four quarters of play. The evening started off at Memorial Stadium in downtown Seattle with sophomore quarterback Jeff Lindquist making an 18-yard run, followed by a 2-point conversion run from Connor Bernal. Minutes later, Bernal caught a 3-yard pass from Lindquist to take a 14-0 lead.

In the second quarter, Alex Rorem caught a 68-yard pass from Ben Emanuels, followed by a successful Alex Wood kick before Kurtis Rosengreen caught a 10-yard pass from Lindquist to score 14 more points for a 28-0 lead heading into the break at halftime.

The second half kicked off with a 45-yard fumble return by Emanuels, a junior, to extend the Islanders’ lead to 35-0. Rosengreen made a successful 1-yard run in the third followed by a solid Wood kick to end the third quarter with a convincing 42-0 lead.

During the last 12 minutes of the season, junior Doug Mahony made a 2-yard run to earn the last Mercer Island touchdown of 2009.

During the season Lindquist set a new school record for the most touchdown passes in the season for the Islanders with 13. The previous record had been held by Mark Stillwell, class of 1973 and Sam Hale, class of 1999, who is the current quarterbacks coach for Mercer Island.

Heading into his junior year, Lindquist is two touchdown passes away from setting a new record for the most touchdown passes in a career. The record is held by Matt Hale, with 26, from 1990-92.
