Islander Fran Call was named the Mercer Island Citizen of the Year on Monday evening, June 3, at the Mercer Island City Council meeting.
In her life and her career, Call, a former Mercer Island School District teacher, has been an advocate for physical fitness for all ages. As a teacher, she led cross-country bike trips of high school students cycling as far as Washington, D.C. The group was named the ‘Cyclemates.’
After she retired from teaching, she began organizing weekly walks and hikes for seniors. She has led these outings as a volunteer for more than 15 years through the city’s Parks and Recreation Department.
